Work Crew Thank you
Biddenden Bowls Club
This newsletter is coming out to acknowledge and thank the members who specifically work to maintain the green and surrounds including buildings. They often do this without other members really realising just how much is done to allow us to play bowls in the lovely setting which is Biddenden Bowls Club.
Clearance behind the metal hut including the concrete removed from the old ditches
Paul B and Jim have worked virtually full time for 6 days with a mini digger, sledge hammer, rakes and other equipment to level and clear a huge area. This is now ready for compost heaps, leaf bins etc. Hardcore from the old ditches has been levelled and broken down. Help is needed on Monday 24th July from 10am to help barrow in some "type 1" to finish off the surface over the hardcore.
Norman also helped with the clearance and was there when the 3 men were attacked by wasps. They unknowingly disturbed a wasp nest in a builders merchants bag. Ralph came along in full Bee Keepers kit to dispose of the nest and despite quite a lot of stings the team bravely worked on.
Massive thanks to them for putting in well over 60 hours of physical volunteer work for this one-off task.
Thank you to David C for the new trellis screen in front of replaced irrigation tank
When new member David C saw the gap in front of the new irrigation tank, he immediately volunteered to produce a trellis and planter screen. This duly appeared a few days later and has been planted up with a few shade loving plants provided by Shirley. (I understand he is also looking at production of compost and leaf bins in the newly cleared area.
Mowing Crew
The “5 man” team is continuing to mow the green virtually every other day. Whilst this sometimes only takes off a "half box" it is keeping the mower working and the green running well.
Tuesday Morning Work crew
Work continues on Tuesday mornings (as it does throughout the year) with green maintenance, mowing and strimming of surrounds, maintenance of buildings and equipment and whatever else needs doing. Here again a small group of regulars come along but more will always be welcome.
Brushers/Swishers
The green should be brushed/swished every morning to keep the grass in good condition. The team comprising male and female members is continuing to do a great job. Gaps in the rota do arise (due to holidays/injury etc) and so extra names will again be welcome.
COGS
The COGS team led by Shirley has been working on the banks and paths & other tasks including fitting and using new water butts. Their Chelsea chop of the geraniums has been amazingly successful with new leaves shooting out ready for Ladies Day. Jim has his hanging baskets ready to bring along once wind and sunshine allow.
AND FINALLY
As we prepare to get the green and surrounds into pristine condition ready for Ladies Day and Finals Weekend there is still lots to be done especially on the paths and edges with weeding, bramble removal, trimming etc. Please can you commit a few hours to help?
