24 Hour Sportathon
Biddenden Bowls Club
The season is now well underway with 5 friendlies and 4 League games completed and with 19 members having played in one or more games.
Our open day last Sunday went well as we welcomed 7 potential new members and welcomed back 3 of our juniors from last season. Thank you to the members who came along to help on the day.
24 HOUR SPORTATHON WILL BE AT THE GREEEN ON FRIDAY EVENING (24th MAY) from 6pm to 7pm.
Coach Tom Swain (who is doing the 24 events) will be at the green with 3 supporters ready for a bowls challenge!! PLEASE PLEASE COME ALONG AND SUPPORT THIS. Paul B will be coordinating for us and is planning to have some pairs and triples taking place. This is important for our profile and should be great fun. Why not bring along a suitable tipple and come and make an evening of it. This is in aid of John Mayne School's PTA and you can donate on the evening or visit Tom's Just Giving Page Crowdfunding to raise funds for John Mayne PTA to develop the outdoor, sports and play areas by completing a 24hr sports challenge on JustGiving
Thursday Club Afternoons and Roll ups.
Member are getting along to practise, play and of course socialise. Mowing is normally happening on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings and is generally finished by noon. We are hoping that with the improving weather and the green getting faster, lots more of our 42 members plus our potential new members will be along. Don't forget Thursday 6th JUNE which is our captains' afternoon starting at 2pm.
Ladies Day 8th August
Great news is that we already have 22 teams entered - just 2 more needed. Really will be all "hands on deck" on the day to make this the huge success that it has been over recent years (our biggest fundraiser!).The raffle has always had a good reputation for a wide variety of quality prizes - please can we ask everyone to donate something. For non perishables the raffle box is in the Ladies Changing Room.
Call out for the Green Keeping Team - well done and thanks
It has not been easy with the challenges of the weather over the winter and right into the start of the season. Last week, after yet another deluge of rain, the team verti cut and mowed on Monday, sarrel rolled and rolled on Tuesday, mowed on Wednesday and Friday and brushed on 3 mornings. This level of activity needs to continue through out the season plus if the grass is to fill out and flourish, we need to start regularly applying treatments. This is the challenge of maintaining a green within a budget. The work crew is now meeting on Monday mornings but work can be done at other times to suit individuals. Rather crazily if the rain becomes more sporadic, as seems likely, we will also need to do targeted watering before too long.
AND that is just the green - don't forget the surrounds, banks, hedges, buildings and other rotas (e.g. toilet/clubhouse cleaning). Many hands really do make light work!!
Competitions
The draws for the Club Championship, Ladies and Mens Championships and Biddenden Bowl have been made and are up in the clubhouse. Have a look, get some singles practice in and then get playing!
OPEN PAIRS - In the absence of a competitions secretary, most of our other competitions are not taking place this year BUT I am willing to run an open pairs on a knockout basis with set play by dates (similar to the singles championships). Entry sheet is up in the clubhouse - open means it can be 2 men, 2 ladies, 1 man/1 lady. You need to find your partner. Format will be 18 ends 3 bowl triples (which is in line with National Mixed Pairs format) Provided we get at least 4 pairs the competition will run - but I would prefer lots of pairs! Please put your name down or let me know your pair by 31st May so that the draw can be made.
FINALLY - massive congratulations to Paul B who yesterday qualified as a National Grade Umpire. Lots of hard work and a great achievement.
